vagus nerve stimulation

What is the VAgus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the body’s primary communication pathway between the brain and the internal organs. Often called the “wandering nerve,” it travels from the brainstem down through the neck into the chest and abdomen, connecting to the heart, lungs, and digestive system. More than just a single nerve, it acts as a living feedback loop between the brain and the body.

This nerve is a cornerstone of the parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for calming, restoring, and regulating. It helps control heart rhythm, breathing patterns, digestion, inflammation signals, and the body’s ability to recover from stress. In healthy balance, the vagus nerve allows the body to move fluidly between action and rest, effort and repair.

When stress becomes chronic, this communication pathway can lose its flexibility. The body may remain stuck in a heightened state of alert, contributing to patterns of tension, fatigue, inflammation, digestive issues, and pain. Supporting vagal tone is one way to help restore this dialogue, giving the nervous system a clearer signal of safety and balance.

At its core, the vagus nerve is the body’s built-in regulator. It is how the brain listens to the body, and how the body learns it is safe to heal.

What is Vagus Nerve Stimulation

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system—often called the “rest and digest” state.

This supports the body’s natural ability to:

  • Regulate stress responses

  • Calm the nervous system

  • Improve communication between brain and body
